Applications for enrolment at The National Sport School (Year 9)

The National Sport School will receive applications from students who as from next scholastic year wish to pursue their academic studies as well as train in the sport they excel in.

All male and female students from Malta and Gozo, born in 2004, who are currently in their second year at Secondary School and who are deemed talented and highly promising in their field of sport by coaches within their respective National Sport Association, are eligible to apply for entrance into the National Sport School. There are a very limited number of places available at this late entry point. Those who are eventually selected will join the students currently in Year 8 (Form 2) at the National Sport School.

A meeting for parents will be held on:

to discuss in detail the selection process and the entry requirements for the National Sport School.

Applications are open as from Monday 27th February, 2017 and may be obtained from the Customer Care Section, Directorate for Educational Services, Great Siege Road, Floriana or the Education Office, Fortunato Mizzi Street, Victoria, Gozo. Applications can also be accessed online at www.education.gov.mt or on the official school website at http://nss.skola.edu.mt/.

Closing date for submission of applications is noon, Monday 27th March 2017 and these can be submitted at the Customer Care Section, Directorate for Educational Services, Great Siege Road, Floriana or the Education Office, Fortunato Mizzi Street, Victoria, Gozo.

Gozo Live Gozo College Writing Event

The 2016 Gozo Live Gozo College Writing Participation concluded with an event at the Secondary School on Friday 9th December.  A large number of students who had entered the participation, their family members and teachers attended.  Selected students were asked to read excerpts from their work.

This year there were a total of 88 entries to the writing participation.  Earlier in the year the creative writing award event was held.

All students who entered the participation received a certificate, judge’s comments on their entries and a copy of edition 3 of ‘Young Writers of Gozo’. Additional copies of this book are available from the schools. Students who did not attend on Friday can collect their certificates and books from the school.

Two leading publishers also attended the event and held a mini book fair. One of the books on sale was ‘Escape’ the latest book published by 6th Form student Corrine Zahra.

Rules for the 2017 creative writing award competition and the writing participation are now available.  These can be obtained from the schools or from the Gozo Live page on face book or by emailing gozolive2018@gmail.com.

Gozo College Xewkija Primary Open Day

Gozo College Xewkija Primary School on Monday, 5th December held a colourful programme on its recently innovated school premises to celebrate the Open and Celebration Day.

The day kicked off by students who sang the Gozo College and the Xewkija hymn while directed by the music teacher.  The junior students presented a number in the hall with the theme of diversity and inclusion entitled “Hello to all the Children of the World” to mark the occasion.

At the outset, school Headmistress Ms Frankline Zammit Galea, welcomed the guests and listed the achievements of the institution. The audience who included parents and carers of students and also parents of future students who at presently are under threes,  listened with rapt attention. Oher Heads of schools also visited and took part in the event.

The students who are council members council members (empowered and lead by the PSCD teachers) were also hustling and bustling in the school kitchen to see to the healthy food being distributed to all the students of the school.  The peripatetic teacher of “The Catch them Young” programme also animated an activity to inform parents and children about healthy lifestyles.  Parents were participating in class lessons or activities which this year were centered around Guided Maths and Science.   We had other entities outside the school such as a gym instructor, a nutritionist and the Xewkija Tigers Trainers who organised activities so that students and adults joined in and had a thorough workout.  The Gozo College Principal, Mr Victor Galea handed the certificates to all students who set for the annual exams and wrapped up the certificate ceremony by emphasising that such events and the progress of the school is the result of collaboration among all stake holders.

Gozo College Secondary School EkoSkola projects

The Gozo College Secondary School EkoSkola team took part in four projects, namely: beachcleaning, the making of a Christmas tree and decorations from packaging cardboard, Wasteserv talks for parents and students and paper shredding for animal bedding.

For the beach cleaning project, the team went to Dwejra, San Lawrenz. Among the waste collected there were both plastic and glass bottles, cardboard, disposable coffee cups, broken glass, plastic bags and other similar material. The waste was gathered in large bags and then it was sorted into the respective recycling bins at Dwejra. Judging by the litter collected it was clear to the team that this place has rarely been cleaned, even though it is one of the main attractions that tourists visit when they come to Gozo.

For the second project the EkoSkola team built a Christmas tree from packaging cardboard boxes. These boxes were supplied by retailers who sell white goods and other cumbersome items. The finished Christmas tree was decorated with cardboard decorations as well and is now displayed in the school foyer as part of the Christmas decorations. It will be stored during the year to be reused for future Christmases.

The third project consisted of talks given by Wasteserv to parents and students. A Wasteserv representative came to our school to discuss issues related to waste, mainly Organic waste. In order to be more effective, these talks were spread out in three days so each talk was given to a group of 50 students.

The fourth and last project had to do with paper shredding for animal bedding. The team had the task of collecting used papers, old newspapers and magazines from other students and teachers, from their home and from school. The accumulated material was then shredded to be spread out under the animals’ hooves to keep the ground dry.

Service Dog Malta Foundation – Gozo College Sannat

The Service Dog Malta Foundation is a registered NGO which has been set up since 17th April 2013. Our aim is that of helping people with special needs by providing them with a service dog that has been trained to overcome some of the difficulties that they encounter on a day to day basis.

Among other things, service dogs can be trained as:

  • Autism Assistance Dogs– these dogs give persons on the autistic spectrum support and provide them with confidence and a sense of independence.
  • Diabetic Alert Dogs– these dogs alert a diabetic person when their blood sugar level is reaching dangerously high or low levels.
  • Hearing Dogs– these dogs alert a person with hearing difficulties when there is something that needs their immediate attention such as a knock on the door, a smoke alarm or a baby crying.
  • Mobility Assistance Dogs– among other things, these dogs are trained to pick up or carry objects and open and close drawers and doors for people who have mobility issues or are wheelchair-bound.
  • Seizure Alert Dogs– these dogs alert a person who is prone to seizures that an episode is imminent so that the person can lie down or take other precautions such as stop driving.
  • Therapy Dogs– these dogs provide comfort and a sense of peace and security for people with mental health conditions.

There are as many types of service dogs as there are conditions which can be eased by training a dog to perform a task!

For the time being we are focusing on training Autism Assistance Dogs, Diabetic Alert Dogs and Therapy Dogs with a special emphasis on training dogs to work with children.  If you think you or a member of your family would benefit from the services of an Autism Assistance or Diabetic Alert Dog you may contact us to obtain a relevant application form.
The Service Dogs are given to the persons who need them for free (subject to certain terms and conditions). However one should remember that these dogs cost us approximately €15,000 each to train and maintain and persons who are matched with a dog are expected to care for them as instructed by our trainer. The dogs remain the property of the foundation so should we feel that there is any form of mistreatment or lack of care the dogs will revert back to the foundation.

L-Aġenzija Nazzjonali tal-Litteriżmu tal-Ministeru għall-Edukazzjoni u x-Xogħol b’kollaborazzjoni mal-entità Libreriji Maltin se tissokta tifrex il-programm ta’ qari għall-gost Seħer l-Istejjer / The Magic of Stories. Dan il-programm, li jagħmel parti mill-Istrateġija Nazzjonali tal-Litteriżmu għal Kulħadd huwa maħsub għal tfal ta’ bejn l-erba’ snin u tmienja, u l-ġenituri jew il-kustodji tagħhom. Is-sessjonijiet isiru darba fil-ġimgħa, bil-Malti jew bl-Ingliż fl-iskejjel primarji tal-istat, fil-libreriji pubbliċi, f’ġonna, f’ċentri parrokjali u f’ċentri tal-kunsilli lokali. Bħalissa, il-programm qed isir f’numru żgħir ta’ lokalitajiet Maltin u Għawdxin. Bil-ħsieb li l-programm jiġi offrut f’aktar postijiet, qed noħorġu sejħa oħra għall-animaturi (għalliema, kindergarten assistants, LSAs u ġenituri) li jixtiequ jħaddmu dan il-programm.

L-animaturi jrid ikollhom ir-rieda u l-ħeġġa li jħajru lit-tfal u lil min ikun qed jieħu ħsiebhom jieħdu sehem attiv f’għadd ta’ attivitajiet interattivi ta’ qari għall-gost. Huma jridu jkunu jistgħu jagħtu sessjonijiet kull ġimgħa u jattendu t-taħriġ li se jsir apposta għalihom fit-22 ta’ Novembru 2016, fl-4:00 ta’ waranofsinhar, fiċ-Ċentru Nazzjonali tal-Kurrikulu, Triq Joe Abela Scolaro, il-Ħamrun. Dan il-programm ta’ qari u rrakkontar ta’ stejjer għall-gost huwa mmirat għal trabi u tfal ta’ taħt it-tliet snin u l-ġenituri/kuraturi tagħhom. Fis-sessjonijiet il-ġenituri/kuraturi ma’ wliedhom jisimgħu storja tinqara minn animatriċi filwaqt li jkantaw, jiżfnu u jagħmlu attivitajiet oħra divertenti. Il-Proġett Rakkonti – Ħrejjef Maltin animati bil-Pupazzi Bertu u Bettina

Fis-26 ta’ Ottubru 2016 filgħodu, fl-Iskola Primarja tas-Siġġiewi, tal-Kulleġġ San Injazju, l-Aġenzija Nazzjonali tal-Litteriżmu bl-għajnuna ta’ Banif Bank nediet il-proġett Rakkonti. Dan il-proġett se jkun mifrux fuq medda ta’ tliet snin u l-għan tiegħu hu li jkattar il-ħiliet tal-lingwa u tal-litteriżmu (jiġifieri, il-qari, is-smigħ, it-taħdit, il-kitba, u l-ħsieb kritiku), fost it-tfal tas-snin bikrin u tal-primarja.

Rakkonti jippromwovi l-ħrejjef tradizzjonali Maltin bl-użu ta’ animazzjonijiet diġitali, mużika u l-pupazzi Bertu u Bettina. Il-ħrejjef inkitbu u ġew illustrati minn Trevor Żahra, u jistgħu jinqraw bħala rakkont jew jiġu rreċtati bil-pupazzi. Kull skola primarja tal-istat ta’ Malta u Għawdex se tingħata sett ta’ pupazzi. Għal kull ħrafa nkitbet kanzunetta bi kliem ta’ Trevor Żahra u mużika ta’ Dominic Galea. Il-ħrejjef u l-kanzunetti ngħataw xeħta animata b’mod diġitali.

Għalkemm dawn il-ħrejjef jistgħu jiġu apprezzati minn tfal ta’ etajiet differenti, kull ħrafa ġiet abbinata ma’ sena partikolari (mill-KG1 sas-6 sena tal-primarja). Fis-sena skolastika 2016-2017, se jkunu jistgħu jintużaw l-ewwel tliet ħrejjef; Il-Ħrafa tax-Xhur (għat-3 Sena), Il-Ġgant u l-Iskarpan (għall-5 Sena), u Ix-Xiħ Midfun ġol-Għar (għas-6 Sena). Matul din is-sena skolastika, il-kapijiet tal-iskejjel primarji se jintwerew kif jista’ jitħaddem il-proġett fl-iskola tagħhom, filwaqt li t-Timijiet tal-Litteriżmu se joffru taħriġ lill-għalliema fuq kif jistgħu janimaw dawn il-ħrejjef bl-użu tal-pupazzi.
